I search for the beauty in forgotten and neglected places. Spaces between one thing and another. Things that go unnoticed or might be deemed unworthy of attention until they have found a new form.

Vancouver is undoubtedly a spectacular city, but it’s also a place of hard work and graft; of high hopes and simmering potential. And the skyscrapers, alleyways, old factories, industrial parks, and almost bland residential neighbourhoods – all send signals of a city in ceaseless transition.

You can safely stop reading now, look at this photograph of an ice chest at a filling station, subscribe, then get on with things.

Gearheads

Photography enthusiasts and gearheads are almost indistinguishable. I know you’re out there. I get it. I love this stuff.

This photoletter isn’t about the methods and techniques of making photographs, or evaluating camera gear or software. I’ll provide some technical specs in each issue, and maybe this time it’s enough to just have a fair idea about what kinds of tools were used without getting hung-up on the machinery.

Art Lovers

Then there’s all of you who are looking for art and beauty, and don’t really care what the make and model of Michelangelo’s hammer and chisel were, because – I mean, David. Just look at it. I get it. I love this stuff too.

If you’re here for this, I’m glad. I can’t guarantee you’ll find my photos beautiful or artistic though. I hope you do, but I can’t promise. And no it’s not because “art is subjective” or “this style is beautiful but that style isn’t”, or anything like that — It’s because maybe the subject in the frame isn’t the subject of the photograph.
